Tours here exist for one practical reason: the mountain tracks above Ayder are unpaved, single-lane and steep, and the plateau viewpoints are worth nothing if you arrive after the cloud has burned off. A local driver solves both — the vehicle and the timing.

How a day usually runs

  1. 01

    Pickup at your door

Plateau departures are early — often 05:00–06:00 in summer — because the cloud sea sits below the ridge for the first hour after sunrise.

  2. 02

    The right vehicle

Pokut, Sal, Kavrun and Zilkale's upper road need a 4x4 or a high minibus. Valley and coastal routes do not, and paying for one is unnecessary.

  3. 03

    Stops, not a schedule

Weather changes the order. A good driver reverses the route rather than cancel it — valley and bridges first if the top is closed in.

  4. 04

    Back before the afternoon rain

Most plateau days end around midday. That leaves the thermal baths, the waterfall walk or a long lunch for the rest of the afternoon.
