Ayder in Summer: Cool Air, Plateaus and Peak Season

Why summer is the main season, what is open, and how to avoid the busiest hours.

The weather

Summer daytime temperatures in Ayder usually sit far below the coast, and evenings need a jacket even in August. Rain and mist arrive in short bursts rather than all-day downpours; mornings are typically the clearest part of the day.

What is open

This is when the whole valley operates: 4x4 transfers to Pokut and Sal, Fırtına Valley rafting, zipline, the hot springs, highland breakfast houses and trout restaurants. Kaçkar trekking routes are at their most accessible from July.

Managing the crowds

July and August are busy. Start plateau trips before sunrise, keep the middle of the day for the village, waterfall and lunch, and leave shopping for the evening. Book accommodation and drivers weeks in advance rather than on arrival.

A simple summer plan

Day one: arrive, settle, walk to the waterfall. Day two: sunrise at Pokut and Sal, afternoon rest. Day three: Fırtına Valley, Zilkale and a riverside lunch, with rafting added if your group is up for it.
