The atmosphere
Winter empties Ayder of summer crowds. Snow usually sits on the village and surrounding forest from December to March, wood smoke drifts from the cabins and the waterfall partially freezes in cold spells. For many Gulf families it is the first close experience of deep snow, which is the main reason to come.
Getting there safely
The coastal highway is normally clear; the climb from Çamlıhemşin is where conditions change. Winter tyres or chains are the norm and local drivers are used to it. Travel in daylight, keep the schedule flexible, and treat any single-day plan to a high plateau as weather-dependent.
Where to stay
Choose a stay that confirms heating, hot water and winter access for vehicles — not every summer bungalow operates year-round. Cabins with a fireplace and an enclosed car park are the practical winter choice, and staying inside the village saves you from icy side tracks at night.
What to do
Snow play near the village, the thermal baths, short forest walks on cleared paths, and long breakfasts are the core of a winter visit. Rafting and high plateau 4x4 tours are summer activities. Bring waterproof boots, gloves and spare socks for children — rented gear is limited.
