Trabzon to Ayder: Every Way to Make the Journey

Most visitors land in Trabzon. Here is how the road to Ayder works, what to expect with children and luggage, and where to stop.

The route in brief

Trabzon Airport (TZX) sits on the coast. The drive follows the Black Sea highway east through Of, Ardeşen and Pazar, then turns inland at Çamlıhemşin and climbs the Fırtına Valley to Ayder at about 1,350 m. It is roughly 180 km; drivers usually plan around three hours door to door, longer in heavy summer traffic or bad weather.

Private driver vs rental car vs public transport

A private transfer is the simplest option for families arriving with luggage and children: one vehicle, door to door, with a driver who knows the valley road. A rental car gives freedom for plateau day trips but the last section is narrow and winding. Public minibuses (dolmuş) run from Ardeşen and Pazar to Ayder and are cheap, but timings change by season and space for large suitcases is limited.

Travelling with children and luggage

The final hour is a mountain road with continuous bends, so travel sickness is common with young children — plan a stop in Çamlıhemşin and keep water and snacks reachable. If you need child seats, request them when you book the transfer rather than on arrival. Large families are usually better served by a Vito-class van or a minibus than by two saloon cars.

Worthwhile stops on the way

Two stops fit naturally into the drive without adding a full day: the stone bridges and tea houses around Çamlıhemşin, and the Fırtına Valley riverside trout restaurants below Ayder. If you have half a day spare, Zilkale castle is a 30–40 minute detour up the side valley and is far quieter in the morning.

Weather and timing

Rain is possible in any month and fog can sit on the valley road in the afternoon, so an early departure is easier than a late one. In winter the coastal section stays clear while the climb above Çamlıhemşin can hold snow; ask your driver about current conditions on the day rather than relying on a forecast for Rize city, which sits at sea level.
